Optimum Seed Coat Scarification and Light Treatment for the Germination of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica STEUD) Seed

Portz, H L
Murray, J J
Abstract
It was reported that mechanical or chemical scarification followed by light treatment was effective on the germination of zoysiagrass seed which has poor germination. The objectives of this research were to further refine the optimum method of the seed coat scarification and light treatment for the production of pregerminated seeds. The results were as follows:
1. In the case of seed scarification, treatment with 25 to 30% KOH for 25 or 30 minutes was the most effective on germination. Using NaOH, optimum germination occurred within a wider range of concentration and treatment duration compare to KOH.
2. The scarified seeds should be irradiated with at least 50 microeinstein m^(-2)sec^(-1) for at least 10 minutes after 24 hour imbibition.
3. Optimum germination of zoysiagrass seed occurred following pregermination treatment of 36 to 48 hours. This treatment brought the germination process to an irreversible stage and germinability did not decrease when stored as dry seed.
